Shoma Uno regains form in the free skate to win Skate Canada

Hometown favorite Keegan Messing places second to earn his first Grand Prix medal, Junhwan Cha makes history for South Korean men with a bronze

Shoma Uno, the Olympic silver medalist from Japan, looked shaky in the short program after a bad landing on a quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop combination and a fall on a triple Axel.

Uno skated to "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin for his short program and "Moonlight Sonata" for his free skate.

However, Uno came back to show his typical steady form in the free skate with four quadruple jumps. His only mistake in the first half of the program was an under-rotation on one attempt, the quadruple Salchow. Despite falling on a triple Axel combination and a triple Salchow-triple toe loop combination, Uno ran away with the victory in the free skate as well as the overall competition.

In contrast, Canadian national silver medalist Keegan Messing was extremely solid in his short program, landing a beautiful quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop combination, a triple Axel, and a triple Lutz. Every single element received positive grades of execution. He earned a personal best of 95.05 and was in the surprise lead after the short program.

Messing skated to "You've Got a Friend in Me" by Randy Newman for his short program and a Charlie Chaplin medley for his free skate.

In the free skate, Messing attempted two quadruple toe loops but fell on the second one, and therefore was not able to put the jump in combination. He placed second in the free skate, but his combined score was a personal best. It allowed him to place second overall.

Junhwan Cha, who represents South Korea but currently trains in Toronto, placed third after the short program behind Uno by exactly 0.01 points. He also placed third in the free skate to finish third overall. His win was a historical first-ever Grand Prix medal for South Korean men.

Cha skated to "The Prince" from Cinderella for his short program and selections from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack for his free skate.
