2018 NHK Trophy Men's Preview

Shoma Uno, Dmitri Aliev, and Vincent Zhou plan six quads each, Sergei Voronov hopes to repeat Grand Prix Final berth

Three young quadsters will be attempting 18 quadruple jumps between them at the 2018 NHK Trophy men's event, to be held in Hiroshima, Japan, this weekend.

Shoma Uno of Japan, the reigning Olympic and World silver medalist, will be attempting the quadruple flip, the quadruple Salchow, and the quadruple toe loop. Uno won Skate Canada earlier this year and hopes to continue his winning streak at home this weekend.

Dmitri Aliev of Russia was the first European man to land the quadruple Lutz, quadruple Salchow, and quadruple toe loop. He will attempt to land two quadruple jumps in the short program and four in the free skate as well.

Vincent Zhou of the United States will attempt the quadruple Lutz, quadruple flip, and quadruple toe loop this weekend. He hopes to improve on his fifth place finish at Skate America earlier this season. Tom Zakrajsek, who coaches Zhou in Colorado Springs, Colorado, demanded that better video footage from multiple angles be made available to judges after Zhou received six under-rotation calls as well as edge calls on all three of the flips that he attempted at Skate America.

Veteran skater Sergei Voronov of Russia hopes to challenge his younger competitors with only one quadruple jump attempt in the short program and two attempts in the free skate. He won the bronze medal at Skate America and hopes to continue his podium streak in Hiroshima and potentially qualify for the Grand Prix Final once more.

Also challenging for the podium are Kevin Reynolds of Canada, Matteo Rizzo of Italy, Deniss Vasiļjevs of Latvia, Lee June-hyoung of South Korea, Alexander Johnson of the United States, Hiroaki Sato of Japan, and Sota Yamamoto of Japan.

Nathan Chen wins Skate America with a world record and half of his usual quads

Brezina shows improved form and captures silver, Voronov takes the bronze

American Nathan Chen, the reigning World champion, ran away with the competition at Skate America this weekend. He attempted only half of his usual number of quads: one in the short program and three in the free skate. At his peak, Chen's layout contained two quads in the short program and six in the free skate. However, he made no major mistakes in either program, save for an under-rotation of a quadruple flip in the short program and an unclear edge call in the free skate. On his way to the win, Chen took world records of the new scoring system in the free skate and in the combined total from Shoma Uno of Japan. Uno had earned 172.05 and 276.20, then the highest free skate and combined scores respectively, at the Lombardia Trophy earlier this year. Shoma Uno regains form in the free skate to win Skate Canada

Hometown favorite Keegan Messing places second to earn his first Grand Prix medal, Junhwan Cha makes history for South Korean men with a bronze

Shoma Uno, the Olympic silver medalist from Japan, looked shaky in the short program after a bad landing on a quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop combination and a fall on a triple Axel. Uno skated to "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin for his short program and "Moonlight Sonata" for his free skate. However, Uno came back to show his typical steady form in the free skate with four quadruple jumps. His only mistake in the first half of the program was an under-rotation on one attempt, the quadruple Salchow. Despite falling on a triple Axel combination and a triple Salchow-triple toe loop combination, Uno ran away with the victory in the free skate as well as the overall competition.
